FAN FICTION

INTRODUCTION:

Fan Fiction, also known as “fan fic” is a new genre of English literature. It is a story written not by recognized authors, but by the fans of the recognized authors of fiction. It involves some popular characters of some popular authors. Here, the fans who are impressed by some stories and characters further start writing on those characters and post it on internet and other media. In short, fan fiction is a story written by the fans on some existing work or fiction.

HISTORY OF FAN FICTION:

The phrase FAN FICTION was coined in 1940s in English literature. Though it became more popular only after the wide spread of internet, one may claim that FAN FICTION was written in olden times too. For example,

·      The Christian Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John written by many religious people can be called fan fiction.

·      William Shakespeare based most of his plays off myths, legends, and histories which he read in his lifetime.

·      E. L. James first published online her ‘50 Shades of Grey’ as fan fiction based on the Twilight fantasy series before its formal publication in 2011.

CONCLUSION:

In short, we may say that FAN FICTION is a new form of literature especially novels written by the fans of the popular authors. Since it is written by unauthorized and unskilled fans, it might not contain good literary devices. The fans write the stories on their own, extending the stories, sometimes changing the actions and behavior of the characters using their own imagination.

Reaction to fan fiction is mixed. Some original creators like J. K. Rowling of ‘Harry Potter’ feel flattered by their offshoots, while others such as George R. R. Martin, the author of ‘Game of Thrones’ is not happy with the fan fiction based on his own stories.
