Greco Roman Period: 10 Most Famous Writers

 

The Greco-Roman period is a time in history that covers the period from the 8th century BC to the 5th century AD. During this period, there were many writers who made significant contributions to literature, philosophy, history and literary criticism. Some of the most famous writers of the Greco-Roman period are as under.

 1. Homer - A Greek poet who wrote the epic poems Illiad and Odyssey.

 2. Hesiod - A Greek poet who wrote Works and Days, a poem that offered advice on farming and daily life.

 3. Aesop - A Greek writer who is known for his fables, short stories that teach moral lessons.

 4. Plato - A Greek philosopher who wrote many dialogues, including Ion and Republic, in which he discusses his ideas on government and justice. Here, he has criticized poets and poetry.

 5.  Aristotle - A Greek philosopher who wrote on a wide range of subjects including ethics, politics, and metaphysics. He wrote Poetics where he discusses types of poetry and discusses tragedy in detail.

 6. Cicero - A Roman philosopher, statesman, and orator who wrote on a variety of subjects, including law, politics, and ethics. His most important literary works are On Moral Duties (De Officiis), On Old Age (De Senectute), On Friendship (De Amicitia), On the Nature of the Gods and so on.

 7. Virgil - A Roman poet who wrote the epic poem Aeneid, which tells the story of the founding of Rome.

 8.  Ovid - A Roman poet who wrote on a variety of subjects, including love and mythology. His most important mythological work is Metamorphoses.

 9.  Seneca - A Roman philosopher and tragedy writer who wrote on a wide range of topics, including ethics, tragedy, and politics. His most famous tragedies are Medea, Thyestes, and Phaedra.

 10 Tacitus - A Roman historian who wrote on the early Roman Empire, including the reigns of emperors such as Augustus and Nero.
