PHONETICS: ORGANS OF SPEECH
Phonetics is the science of studying
correct articulation of sounds in language. Human beings produce two types of
sounds – consonants and vowels. To produce these sounds, we need to use
different organs of speech.
The following chart shows these
organs of speech.
There are two cavities – oral and nasal. Some sounds are produced from oral cavities and some other sounds are produced from nasal cavity.
Lips, teeth, tongue, palate, alveolar
ridge, uvula, vocal cords, glottis and nose are the most important organs of
speech to articulate the sounds.
