Charles Lamb: Introduction

Charles Lamb, William Hazlitt, Thomas De Quincey, Walter Savage Landor and others are some of the most outstanding prose writers of the Romantic Revival.

Charles Lamb (1776-1834) was a man of letters par excellence. He is known as a poet, novelist, dramatist, critic and essayist of the period of Romantic Revival.

 1.  As a poet he earned popularity with his poems 'The Old Familiar Faces' and 'To Hester'.

 2.  As a novelist he wrote 'Rosamond Grey' (1798).

 3.  As a storyteller, he published 'Tales from Shakespeare' (1807) and 'Adventures of Ulysses' written in collaboration with his sister Mary.

 4.  He published a tragedy 'John Woodvil' (1802) which is written in Elizabethan style.

 5.  As a critic, he is known by his 'Specimens of English Dramatic Poets Contemporary with Shakespeare' (1808) wherein he eulogises the lesser known dramatists in the times of Shakespeare. His 'Essays of the Tragedies of Shakespeare' (1811) also contribute immensely in the study of Elizabethan and Jacobean drama.

 6.  As an essayist, Lamb is famous for his 'Essays of Elia' published in 'London Magazine' published in two series in 1823 and 1833.
