WHAT IS A NOUN?
Noun is the name given to a person, thing, place, idea, or
quality of the person.
TYPES OF NOUN:
There are eight types of nouns:
1. Proper noun.
2. Common noun.
3. Material noun.
4. Abstract noun.
5. Collective noun.
6. Countable noun.
7. Uncountable noun.
8. Compound noun.
PROPER NOUN:
It is the name of a particular person, thing, or
place. It is always written witha capital letter at the
beginning of the word.
Ahmedabad is a crowded city.
John plays football.
COMMON NOUN:
It is the name given to every common person or a thing of the
same kind or class or type. Here, a common name is shared by
all.
Dog, cow, table, chair, boy, girl, teacher, mobile, computer
etc.
MATERIAL NOUN:
It denotes the material of the thing and the matter of substance, These
material nouns are not counted.
- This jewelry is made of gold.
- This house is built of concrete and cement.
ABSTRACT NOUN:
It is the name of quality, concept, idea, action or
state, belonging to an object. One cannot see them. They
are abstract. They cannot be counted.
Brightness, happiness, wisdom, darkness, etc.
COLLECTIVE NOUN:
It is the name given to a collection of
persons or things taken together or a group.
audience, class, committee, crowd, team, herd, jury, family,
etc.
- A fleet of
ships.
- A crowd of
people.
- A mob of
angry people.
COUNTABLE NOUN:
It is for something that can be counted. They can be
pluralized.
For example, house, apple, tree, girl, etc.
UNCOUNTABLE NOUN:
It is for something that cannot be counted. They cannot be
pluralized.
For example, oil, grass, water, etc.
COMPOUND NOUN:
When two or more words are combined / joined make a new noun it
is called a compound noun.
Credit-card, daughter-in-law, etc.
