John Wycliffe (1320 – 1384)

John Wycliffe, a philosopher, priest and a reformer. He was a professor at Oxford University. He was a highly learned man of theology and Roman law. Because of his revolutionary nature he entered into conflicts with the church authorities and the Pope.

HIS CONTRIBUTION:

Wycliffe was the first translator of the Bible into the local English language.

He published various leaflets and pamphlets expressing his views regarding the reformation of the church. He has been considered the forerunner of the Reformation movement heralded by Martin Luther in England during the 16th century.
